Decoding the Indian Auto Market: A Deep Dive into Car Data and Insights! Part — 1
Hello automobile geeks, it’s a pleasure to share my analysis of the Indian car market. I have taken data from Kaggle, which includes information on Indian car brands, their models, and their specifications. My curious mind is eager to analyze this data and answer some questions that have been lingering in my and other people’s minds. To accomplish this, I have performed data cleaning and analysis using Python in a Jupyter notebook. I have used pandas DataFrame to work with the CSV file and made use of Matplotlib, Seaborn, Plotly, and Pandas to draw graphs that will answer some important questions.
I must say the data cleaning part was the hardest, as this dataset was not the cleanest😂, but with sheer determination, you can achieve anything and I did the same. After cleaning the data, I was able to answer some of the questions I had in mind such as which Indian car brand has the highest number of models in certain segments, which brand has the most fuel-efficient cars, and which car brand has the highest average price. I also found out that the most popular body type for Indian cars is an SUV and the most common fuel type is Diesel.
I also created a plot that shows the average fuel efficiency of cars with different cylinder configurations, which helped me understand how fuel efficiency varies based on the cylinder configuration of a car.
Furthermore, I created a Pie Chart that shows the number of gears in different models and brands, which helped me understand how the number of gears varies in India. I also found out that the number of gears in Indian cars mostly falls between 5 gears.
Overall, this data analysis allowed me to gain valuable insights into the Indian car market. I hope that my analysis will be helpful to anyone who is interested in learning more about Indian cars. I am now going to mention the questions and try to answer them with some data visualization.
I will link the Jupyter notebook link at the bottom of the page where you can see and understand how I found out the insights.
The Questions —
- So, what are the brands that produce most of the low-priced cars(below Rs 10 Lakhs)? and what about the medium-priced(above Rs 10 Lakhs and below Rs 50 lakhs) car market? Who are the leaders! Also, we cannot forget the High-priced(above Rs 50 Lakhs and below Rs 1 Crore) car market. At last, we also have to take a look at brands selling very high-priced (above Rs 1 Crore) cars.
→ First let's take a look at the low-price car market.
As we can see Maruti Suzuki is way ahead of the competition and understandably so this brand is the king of the low-price car market, Mahindra, Hyundai, and Tata closely follow it.
→ Now let's take a look at the medium-priced car market.
Okay wow! Mahindra definitely takes the lead here with Hyundai, Skoda, and Toyota closely following!!
Also, some luxury brands also entering the scene here Audi, Volvo, BMW, Jaguar, and Mini.
So I can get an eye-popping luxury car below 50 lakhs! ok wow!!
→ Now let's take a look at some proper luxuries ie the high-priced car market!
Ok, Ok things getting 🤑here!! , the Hyundai’s, Tata’s, and Maruti suzuki’s are all gone now! The insight shows us some real luxuries on offer if you have that kind of money!! BMW, Audi, Volvo, and Jaguar leading the race with many more models to offer in the competition! My favorite will always remain the mighty Land Rover!
→ Now for the people who have money they can't even count! ie the very high-priced car market!
Finally, the famous car of many rap songs is here “Lamborghini” and well well it leads this segment too with the most models above the Rs 1 Crore class. Other new entrants are Maserati and Bentley, In short, if you can buy these cars then you will be assumed to have too much money😂.
One thing to notice is Toyota has cars for all price ranges which is a wow factor that a car brand can produce cars in such a range!!
2. Is there a relationship between the engine specifications and fuel efficiency?
→ We will create some scatter plots to study the relationships first and then move on to regression plots.
We can definitely see a relation here, if you look closely you would notice higher displacement engines surely have low city mileage. But we can also take note city mileage is not fully dependent on engine displacement as there are cars that have displacement lower than 4000 cc but have a mileage of only 3 km/l.
Here we can definitely some patterns! As the number of cylinders in the engine increases the highest possible mileage is getting lower and lower!
But also some cars with fewer cylinders too have a lower mileage….
Conclusion — Yes, we can determine a car has less mileage considering its displacement and the number of cylinders it has but keep in mind there are definitely some exceptions.
3. Can we relate Brands to City mileage??
→City Mileage by brands!
Let's get ahead of the boring bar charts and study this Radial Column Chart made with the help of Plotly!
Some of the big noticeable things are the dominance of Maruti Suzuki, Tata, Datsun, and Renault in providing the best City Mileage. Also if you take a step back you see these were also the brands dominating the low-priced car market! , So is there a relationship between price and mileage??
This regression plot confirms our doubt above, the lesser the price the better the mileage you will get.
Also from this, I got another question in mind what is the car brand with the highest average price?
As expected the big guys AKA Aston Martin, Lamborghini, Ferrari and Bentley are the manufacturers who hate making cheap cars😮.
4. What are the Body types that brands bring in India, also which fuel type do they prefer?
→
From this chart, we can surely determine the need for SUV’s is at a whole-time high! But it's fair looking at the roads we have 😂, and in the second position we have hatchbacks as it's obviously affordable. In other countries, these rankings might differ ….
I really thought there will be more petrol cars but diesel takes the lead here!! It's not a fully updated dataset as we have hybrid and Electric cars coming into the market. So 5 years from now we may see a rise in the Electrics!
5. Does the average fuel efficiency of cars with different cylinder configurations varies?? How many gears do car manufacturers provide in India?
→First seeing the graph for the Number of gears and city mileage
It's hard to take useful insights from here which tell us, Yes you could get good mileage with more number of gears or vice versa, it's not so dependent!
Secondly seeing the graph for the Number of cylinders and city mileage
Ok! now here we can definitely notice something!!! City Mileage is heavily impacted by the number of cylinders! So a large no of cylinders definitely equals lesser fuel efficiency.
Now let's see a Pie chart for what number of gears cars have in India!
62.1% of cars have 5 gears, so it's safe to say if you want to guess the number of gears to bet you can have a safe bet of 5!
This will be the end of Part -1, I hope I can deliver you all Part — 2 as soon as possible!
Soo Stay tuned!
